Philosophy took centre stage as our first Department-focused week of the spring term unfolded, presenting a myriad of enriching events. From thought-provoking assemblies to captivating performances, it was a wonderful week of intellectual exploration.

We enjoyed two outstanding student-led assemblies during the week. Firstly, the Year 12-led assembly delved into the intricate realms of the Philosophy of Scepticism, where students challenged conventional beliefs and embraced the nuances of doubt.

Adding a unique twist to the week’s proceedings, the popular TV show ‘Traitors’ underwent a philosophical makeover, with famous philosophers stepping into the spotlight as the enigmatic traitors. This creative rendition offered a fresh perspective, seamlessly blending entertainment with philosophical intrigue.

During Senior Societies on Thursday, the Philosophy Society presented Sartre’s existentialist masterpiece ‘Huis Clos’ or ‘No Exit’, renowned for its haunting line, “Hell is other people”.

The pinnacle of Philosophy Week was the annual Philosophy Conference, where NLCS students welcomed peers from local schools. Attendees were treated to enlightening talks by esteemed speakers such as Olivia Coombes, Sophia Connell, Clare Carlisle, and Fiona Leigh. Topics ranged from the relevance of Socratic questioning in understanding the world to the intersection of philosophy and gender.

Huge thanks to the RS and Philosophy Department, Philosophy Society and all the speakers who joined us this week.
