On Wednesday, seven students from Year 12 visited the Akshaya Patra Kitchen on a very exciting trip.

We hope this will open doors for greater collaboration between NLCS and this foundation, who have such a fundamental role in London and across India: to provide nutritious meals in order that children can benefit from their education.

Upon arrival we were greeted with warmth and welcoming us was a delicious apple juice and a nourishing carrot cake.

Our visit began with a real-life Economics lesson to understand the relationship between hunger and education, the origins of food waste and the impact of the cost of living crisis across many of London’s households. The students visited a modern zero waste kitchen where science is at the core of each decision to ensure minimal waste of energy and maximum nutritional value.

At the end, the students tried two of the twelve signature dishes (mac & cheese and veggie biryani) as well as an innovative dish that is still under testing: veggie noodles.

The students came back eager to give back to the community and to support the Akshaya Patra Kitchen and, indeed, this week, for Feel Good Week, they are going to present the Akshaya Patra Kitchen to Year 10 and Year 12 during form time so that these two year groups can work collaboratively on a special fundraising project. Stay tuned for more information!
