At Canons a series of events have taken place to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

We were honoured to host Holocaust survivor Miriam Freedman as our keynote speaker at Senior Societies. Miriam shared her poignant journey of survival, recounting her time in hiding and how she found solace in yoga and spirituality amidst the profound pain following the Holocaust. Following her talk students had the opportunity to ask Miriam questions about her experience. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Miriam for graciously sharing her story with us.

Jewish Society led an incredibly moving assembly to mark the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is the ‘Fragility of Freedom’, with Jewish Society’s assembly focussing on 4 types of freedom, freedom of choice, freedom of reproduction, false freedom and vulnerability of freedom. Following their poignant assembly a candle was lit in memory of all the victims of the Holocaust and the genocides in Rwanda, Darfur and Cambodia. You can view the full assembly below.

Finally, on Friday, Frau Venter delivered a Nicholson Lecture entitled ‘To communicate the incommunicable – the language of suffering in the poetry of Nelly Sachs and Paul Celan’.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Jewish Society and all those who have played a part in commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day.
