The McLauchlan Library

The McLauchlan Library is a centre for independent learning, recreational reading, and the teaching of research skills.

With over 35,000 resources of various types, it provides a studious, peaceful, and stimulating environment at the heart of the school, and plays an important role in supporting both curricular work as well as independent study and research. It is open and staffed throughout the school day, as well as before and after school.

Our Library collection is curated with an aim to:

  • support students to become enthusiastic readers, critical thinkers, imaginative writers, and intellectual scholars.
  • support academic excellence and intellectual rigour.
  • nurture values of empathy, kindness, compassion, resilience, and curiosity about the world through the world of stories.
Library

A highly qualified team of Librarians facilitates access to this wide range of resources and media, all of which enhance and enrich the learning experience.

  • The non-fiction books are well used, and reflect and complement all subjects in the curriculum as well as extra-curricular interests.
  • There is an excellent stock of fiction, both classic and contemporary, to support reading for pleasure and wellbeing.
  • A complementary collection of journals enables students to keep abreast of current thinking. Many of these are online but a selection of physical journals are available.
  • Newspapers (current and archives) are available online via PressReader or NewsBank.
  • Students are encouraged to use the excellent academic databases to which the Library subscribes. These electronic resources are selected for the relevance of their content and level, and include JSTOR, Gale in Context, Britannica Online, and Oxford Online.
  • An eBook service (ePlatform) provides 24 hour access to selected material.

Library staff are also skilled in the research process, and assist students by means of organised specialist support for those conducting in-depth research, whether for coursework, the IB, the Extended Essay, the EPQ or the McCabe Project.
