Year 4 travelled back in time to Ancient Athens and spent the day in the famous Agora of 490 BC, as rumours swirled that the feared Persian King, Darius, was preparing to invade with a force of over 25,000… The children bravely tamped-down their fear and engaged in a series of authentic crafts – from carving wax tablets to firing oil lamps and other decorative clay artefacts – whilst also imploring Athena and Poseidon for help and looking for ways to rouse the Spartans and Corinthians too.
In the afternoon, news reached the Hall that the Persians had been vanquished and that victory was ours! Celebrating with a decadent feast – of bread rolls, grapes and (very, very watery) ‘wine’ – and a trio of authentic plays and dances was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
Reflecting on the day, Mr Rosenthal said: “Many thanks to ‘History Off the Page’ and our amazing parent-helpers, who made the whole event possible. The children looked great in their costumes, learned lots and had real fun too – what a way for them to begin History this year!”
