At NLCS, we believe that every girl should have the chance to explore her interests, uncover new ones, and approach learning with confidence and curiosity.

Our recent Year 6 transition event captured exactly that spirit, giving students a glimpse of the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

The morning began with two immersive sessions in Science and Drama. In Science, students became investigators, experimenting with patterns and processes to better understand the fascinating structures that underpin our world. Meanwhile, in Drama, the girls took to the stage, exploring movement, expression and the joy of performance. Here, the focus was on developing confidence and creativity — qualities that will serve them well in every part of their school lives.

Afterwards, students were introduced to the breadth of opportunity that NLCS is known for by joining one of four societies:

  • Mad Hatters — celebrating the power of words through writers, book covers and quotes that spark imagination.

  • She Wolves — a history-meets-maths challenge, designing the safest possible medieval castle while sticking to a budget.

  • Oriental Society — discovering the skill and patience required for origami, where careful folds became works of art.

  • Engineering Society — building the tallest possible towers from spaghetti and marshmallows, testing both creativity and structural resilience.

The atmosphere throughout was alive with energy, curiosity and collaboration. Students were encouraged to think differently, to experiment, and to take risks in their learning. Some found themselves drawn to new subjects, while others discovered fresh ways of approaching the things they already loved.

Perhaps the clearest sign of the morning’s success came at the end: the girls were so engaged in their challenges that they didn’t want to return to the Junior School. For us, that says everything.

The Year 6 taster event was more than just a set of activities; it was a snapshot of what makes NLCS distinctive. It showed how our teaching sparks curiosity, how our societies and co-curriculars encourage girls to take on new challenges, and how, in every classroom, we aim to build not just knowledge but confidence, resilience and joy in learning.
