This term, Year 5 pupils took their first steps into the world of artificial intelligence by training micro:bits to recognise hand gestures, including the classic high-five

Using the CreateAI platform from the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, the girls learned how to collect data, train a model, and test their results, following the basics of real world machine learning.

Once their micro:bits could identify gestures accurately, the pupils programmed them to respond with flashing LEDs or a short tune. What began as playful coding soon turned into a deeper understanding of how data quality and model training affect results. Along the way, the girls connected this work to everyday technology such as smartwatches and fitness trackers.

These hands on projects are part of a wider learning programme at NLCS Junior School designed to give pupils a practical understanding of AI. By the time they reach Senior School, students will work towards earning their AI Driving Licence, a qualification that encourages them to think critically, ethically and creatively about artificial intelligence.
