What’s it like to start a fire with flint or churn your own butter? Year 3 travelled back thousands of years to discover how people lived, ate and survived in the Stone Age and Iron Age.

Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic day at the Chiltern Open Air Museum, where they stepped back in time to explore life in the Mesolithic Stone Age and Iron Age. The children met Gilly, an Iron Age farmer, and Tarin, a Stone Age hunter-gatherer, who helped bring history to life through hands-on activities and fascinating stories.

Throughout the day, the children learnt how to use flint to start fires, built their own shelters, and created artwork using charcoal and fats. They developed their spear-throwing techniques, discovered how metal made life easier for people in the Iron Age, and even tried their hand at churning milk into butter and making clay thumb pots. Exploring the Iron Age round house was a real eye-opener and helped children understand just how different life was 3000 years ago.

Rhea said, “My favourite part was when we went to the Stone Age time and we learnt how to start a fire and make art.”
