Junior School Director of Music, Chao Cox, looks back on a Summer Term packed with concerts, workshops and performances

It has been a truly vibrant and memorable end to the academic year, with a packed calendar of musical events showcasing the breadth and depth of talent in our Junior School.

The highlight for many was the whole school Lower School Summer Concert, which brought the magic of Disney to life. Featuring an incredible 12 ensembles, the concert included performances from four choirs to orchestra and percussion ensembles, and a wide range of different instrumentalists, solos and duets. The energy, enthusiasm and confidence shown by all the young performers made it a joyful and uplifting evening, filled with familiar songs and magical moments.

Our Year 6 stole the spotlight with their dynamic and spirited production of School of Rock. The cast delivered impressive performances, combining strong vocals with convincing acting and great comedic timing. The show was full of energy and showcased the students’ ability to work together and shine as individuals, a true celebration of their final year in the Junior School.

Another standout moment this term was the 175th Anniversary Concert at the Royal Institution. This prestigious event featured our Canons Choir, Spiritus, Year 2 and special guest choir Lindely Junior from Huddersfield and marked a significant milestone in the school’s history. Performing in such a historic venue was both an honour and a memorable experience for all involved, and the students rose to the occasion with poise and musical excellence.

We were also proud to release the 175th Our Story Music video, a reflective and inspiring piece capturing our musical journey over the year. The video highlights key performances, student reflections and behind the scenes footage, painting a rich picture of how music has connected and inspired us throughout the school year.

Recently, we had the incredible opportunity to participate in a Choral Workshop led by The Sixteen, one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles. Students from Years 1 to 6 joined in, learning new techniques and experiencing the joy of singing together. The workshop was an inspiring and memorable experience that deepened their love for choral music and helped develop their vocal skills.

To round off an exceptional term, our most accomplished young musicians performed in the final Junior Teatime Concert. This more intimate setting allowed them to showcase their skills through a mix of classical and contemporary pieces. The concert was a fitting finale, recognising the hard work, dedication and progress of our advanced performers.

Altogether, this term has been a true celebration of musical growth. Congratulations to all our pupils and staff who made these events so successful. Your talent and dedication continue to inspire.
