On Friday 8th May, 20 students from Sacred Heart Academy joined 20 of our Year 9 girls for a thought provoking day of discussion and debate centred around the question: “Is it reasonable to believe in an afterlife?”

Held in the inspiring surroundings of the Old House, the event encouraged students to engage with complex philosophical and scientific ideas while developing confidence in expressing and defending their own viewpoints. Throughout the day, students worked collaboratively in mixed school groups to examine evidence and arguments linked to topics such as near death experiences, past-life memories and the growing concept of a post-mortem digital presence through social media.

The debate challenged students to think critically, listen carefully to differing perspectives and refine their ideas through discussion and presentation. As part of the event, each group presented their findings and conclusions, demonstrating impressive skills in oracy, teamwork and reasoning. The winning group explored the concept of reincarnation in depth and the five students involved will each receive trophies in recognition of their presentation.

Beyond the academic discussions, the day was also a wonderful opportunity for students from both schools to build new friendships and enjoy meaningful conversations in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Sharing lunch on the terrace while continuing philosophical discussions made the experience especially memorable.

We are extremely grateful to the staff and students of Sacred Heart Academy for joining us for such an engaging and enriching day. The event was a fantastic opportunity to explore a fascinating topic in real depth and celebrate the value of open minded discussion and critical thinking.
