This week we were lucky enough to be joined by four distinguished philosophers, who came to Canons to discuss their respective theories with both our NLCS sixth formers and students from eight visiting schools, including MCS (Oxford), Woodhouse, LAET, QE Girls, QE Boys, Bentley Wood, Habs and Berkhamsted.

The PAC was buzzing with excitement as over 200 students gathered to listen to Dr Daisy Dixon, artist and philosopher from Cardiff University, speak about ‘Immortal Art’. Her argument was both thought-provoking and insightful, drawing a variety of questions from the floor. Following Dixon’s lecture, ONL Dr Nadia Blackshaw, a philosophy and physics fellow from LSE, took the stage with her claim that “Quantum Physics needs Philosophy”, sharing her insights with our students. After a morning of profound thought, it was then time for lunch, and some students had the opportunity to dine with the speakers themselves, giving us a flavour for the life of a philosopher. We then headed back to the PAC for a talk from Ida Miczke on ‘The case for anti-natalism’, and finally Professor Emerita Angie Hobbs from Sheffield University spoke to us about “Why Plato Matters Now!”. This is also the title of her recent book, and it follows a record number of appearances on BBC Radio 4’s “In Our Time,” programme.

We were so fortunate to meet such esteemed philosophers, and it was a great opportunity to interact with students from other schools. Many thanks to the Philosophy Department for organising such an interesting event!
