From research presentations and public speaking workshops to concerts, debates and Sports Day competition, NLCS students embraced a packed programme of activities during this year’s Out of the Blue week.
Held from 29 June to 3 July, the annual event brought together students from across the school for a week of academic exploration, creative performance, sporting achievement and collaborative learning. Designed to encourage students to step beyond the traditional curriculum, the programme showcased the breadth of opportunities available at NLCS and the talents of its student community.
The week began with a range of pupil-led and interdisciplinary activities. Year 8 students took part in an Interdisciplinary Workshop, while audiences enjoyed performances from the Baroque Sinfonia, Clarinet Ensemble and Year 10 Rock Band. The programme highlighted the importance of curiosity and creativity, giving students opportunities to share their interests and pursue new areas of learning.
Tuesday combined one of the most anticipated events of the school calendar with a celebration of the performing arts. The morning’s Sports Day competition saw pupils representing their houses, before the focus shifted to the stage with the performance of Canons Follies.
Wednesday offered further opportunities for enrichment and collaboration. Year 10 students participated in the QE Symposium, while younger students took part in a Netball Masterclass and a Summer Festival Art Workshop. The day also featured a Vocal Trio and Soloists Concert, before students and staff enjoyed an evening of performance at Canons Fringe.
Academic exploration remained at the forefront on Thursday. Year 9 students engaged in an Interdisciplinary Workshop, while a Nicholson Lecture from Mr Majithia examined the topic of The German Peasants’ War: Communities in Disarray. Later in the day, Year 7 students presented the outcomes of their research projects, demonstrating impressive communication skills, intellectual curiosity and independent thinking. The evening concluded with the much-anticipated Summer Concert, which featured performances from musicians across the school.
The final day of the week centred on student voice, leadership and scholarship. Year 7 pupils participated in a Public Speaking Workshop, Year 8 students took part in Research Project Day, and Year 9 students contested the House Debate. Musical performances continued with a Guitar Ensemble recital, bringing the week’s programme to a fitting close.
Throughout the week, students embraced opportunities to challenge themselves, collaborate with peers and celebrate their achievements. From sporting excellence and academic enquiry to music, drama and debate, Out of the Blue reflected the vibrant culture of learning and participation that characterises life at NLCS.
