Music Roundup – Spring Term 2025

27 March 2025

Gala Concert March 25-105

The Music Department has just concluded its final event in what has been a brilliant, busy, super-musical term, packing in a huge plethora of concerts and performances to give our wonderful musicians plenty of opportunities to share their talents.

This past Wednesday we held our Spring Concert which included such music as the exciting Slavonic Dances by Dvorak, a mesmerising performance of the second movement from Shostakovich’s 2nd Piano Concerto and a beautiful choral arrangement of Bob Dylan’s Times they are a-changin’. The previous week included NLCS’ grand celebration of Founders Day at St Paul’s Cathedral, during which our choirs and Chamber Orchestra performed. Our Gala Concert this year was held on 12th March in the beautiful St Clement Danes Church, Strand, featuring the energetic Gloria by Vivaldi as well as the delightful Flute and Harp Concerto by Mozart. Photographs of the Gala concert are available to view on the NLCS Flickr page.

We were pleased that three of our chamber groups got through to the Final Concert of the South East Schools Chamber Music Competition on 11th March at St George’s Church, Hanover Square, walking away with the Junior and Intermediate trophies. Our Chamber Music programme for advanced musicians continues to be a source of rich musical performance, helping to infuse a real sense of intrepidity and exploration across the whole department’s output. Prior to Half Term we were glad to be able to take a choral group, featuring students from Middle School, to Singapore, participating in the inaugural NLCS Music Festival. The video of the Festival Concert is now available below.

We look forward to the next NLCS Music Festival in 2027. In addition to all of our larger concerts, we offered many smaller Recitals including Piano Concert, Piano Duet Concert, recitals aimed at saxophonists, clarinets, guitarists and singers, lunchtime and evening concerts through our Old House Recital Programme and our own Chamber Music Concert adjudicated by cellist Morwenna Del Mar. All the way back in January we ran our annual NLCS Sessions concert giving space to our keen pop music bands and soloists. We have plans for more opportunities for our guitarists, drummers and pop vocalists next term and beyond. Students continue to work hard to develop their musicianship and we thank parents for supporting their daughters’ considerable endeavours. A well-earned holiday has arrived!
