8 October 2024

MFLSymposium8027

As part of MFL week we were delighted to host our annual Modern Languages Symposium, this year on the theme ‘Music and Words’.

Students from NLCS were also joined by their counterparts from local schools, Harrow, Merchant Taylors, Gray Coat Hospital, QE Boys and Avanti House Secondary.

The evening began with an exceptional lecture performance titled ‘Where Music and Words Meet’, featuring Baritone Anton Kirchhoff and Pianist Tessa Uys. Their stunning performances of works by Schubert, Schumann, and Debussy filled the bustling main hall.

After the keynote, students had the opportunity to attend a range of exciting talks, all tied to the theme. Dr Abi Karas, Teaching Associate in Soviet History at the University of Nottingham, captivated the audience with a talk on The Lives of Young People in the USSR through Song Lyrics.

Several NLCS staff members also delivered insightful lectures, including ‘Dissonant Prosodies: Slam Poetry and Identity Politics in Contemporary France’, ‘Art of Anarchy? The Controversy of German Gangsta Rap as the Voice of the Youth’, and ‘Songs of the People: The Folk Tradition of China’.

The symposium concluded with an engaging panel discussion, where students and speakers came together to explore the themes in greater depth and exchange ideas.

A special thank you to all our speakers and to Frau Venter for organising such a fantastic symposium.
