Can learning a language still shape the future? At NLCS, this question took centre stage during our vibrant Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Week, themed “Human Voices in a Brave New World”.

The week began with an inspiring MFL Week Assembly, setting the tone for five days of celebration, creativity, and curiosity. Students explored the power of language through poetry, debate, puzzles, and theatre, forging connections across cultures and communities.

A highlight of the week was the Modern Foreign Languages Conference, hosted at NLCS and run by the Polyglot Society. Students from schools across London came together on Monday evening to celebrate expression, culture, and creativity. Old North Londoner Isabelle Lever opened the event with a compelling talk on why studying languages at A-level and university remains more vital than ever. Multilingual poetry slams, language challenges, and panel discussions brought the theme to life, showcasing just how much words can connect us.

The week also featured the XIII Hispanic Theatre Festival, where students from twelve schools took to the stage in a stunning display of talent and Spanish skills. NLCS was delighted to scoop two awards: Best Play for an outstanding performance of Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba (La Casa de Bernarda Alba), and Best Actress, awarded to Christina for her exceptional performance.

Throughout the week, students participated in a rich programme of collaborative activities:

  • Y9 and Y10 Poetry Recitation Competition final
  • UK Linguistics Olympiad (UKLO) puzzles with the Maths Society
  • Debates with the Debating Society on topics including “THB the introduction of AI in schools puts language learning at risk” and “THB AI will never replace language teachers”
  • Collaborations with the LGBTQ+ Society exploring language, identity, and expression

MFL Week celebrated not only the beauty and utility of languages, but also the creativity, curiosity, and courage of our students. Huge thanks to ISMLA for its generous sponsorship of the events and all the brilliant students and teachers who contributed — it was a week to remember!
