Mary-Poppins

On Thursday evening, the whole of Year 7 travelled to the West End to see the musical production of Mary Poppins. Miss May, Director of Drama, set budding journalists Kerensa and Hanaka the challenge of reviewing the show:

Hanaka: Hello! Welcome to this interview. I’m Hanaka and I’m talking with Kerensa who saw Mary Poppins, yesterday on our Year 7 trip. So, Kerensa, how did you find the show?

Kerensa: I loved Mary Poppins. All the special effects were so wonderful – and the mechanisms were so well hidden! I’m still wondering how Mary Poppins pulled that plant out of her magic bag!

Hanaka: So, what was your favourite part?

Kerensa: I loved the evil nanny Miss Andrews. I thought she was an extremely clever addition to the plot, even though she wasn’t in the movie. I loved how Mary Poppins scared her off – the ‘Holy Terror’ terrorised! I also loved the clarinet solos – though maybe I’m a bit biased given my clarinet teacher plays them!

Hanaka: I wasn’t listening for the clarinet – but I loved Miss Andrews too! She had an amazing operatic voice. Who was your favourite character?

Kerensa: My favourite character has to be Jane Banks. She’s so funny – always going off in a huff to sulk. She reminds me of myself when I was younger! Then again – Mary Poppins is just a legend. And Michael! Michael Banks is really funny and kind – definitely a well thought out and well portrayed character.

Hanaka: What was your favourite part of the set? My favourites were the Banks’ house- it’s amazing how it just folds out like a Doll’s House- I liked the interior of the bank as well, they made the ceilings look so high. I thought that was a clever optical effect.

Kerensa: Interesting! I loved the beginning scene with the chimney pots – and the chimney sweep dance. The scenery was so detailed.

Hanaka: And finally: what was your favourite song?

Kerensa: It has to be Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. It’s such a classic! Then again, Let’s Go Fly A Kite is amazing.

Hanaka: And now here are our friends telling us about their favourite songs!

Pia: All of them!

Iris: Chim Chimney

Anya: Let’s Go Fly a Kite

Maaya: A Spoonful of Sugar

Mimi: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Romilly: Step in Time

Hanaka: Thank you everyone for sharing your highlights, clearly, there was definitely something for everyone.
