Year 9 students embraced Chinese culture with a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration, marking the arrival of the Year of the Snake.
Under the expert guidance of their teachers, they honed their Chinese calligraphy skills, creating festive banners to welcome good fortune. The festivities continued with students learning to wrap dumplings, a traditional dish enjoyed during the New Year. After cooking their handmade dumplings, they gathered to enjoy the delicious results before rounding off the afternoon with an exciting game of Chinese bingo.
As part of their cultural studies, Year 12 students also visited the British Museum on Friday, 31 January, to explore the Silk Road exhibition. The exhibition showcased artefacts dating back to the 2nd century, highlighting the vast reach of the Silk Roads from Japan and Korea through China and Central Asia to Europe. The students discovered how trade facilitated the exchange of ideas, religion, and artistic influence, including the spread of Buddhism and the famous ‘Tang san cai’ pottery, known for its distinctive green, brown, and white glaze.
