Sharp wit, impressive timing and plenty of confident performances were on display at this year’s Loose Canon comedy showcase.
Earlier this term, our Year 10 students took centre stage for this annual event, which places creativity, collaboration and communication firmly in the spotlight.
The journey to performance began well before the curtain rose. Students spent time workshopping ideas, shaping concepts and refining scripts, testing what worked and reworking what did not. Through rehearsal and iteration and with the help of comedian Anna O’Grady, initial ideas developed into a series of original sketches, each demonstrating a clear sense of voice, purpose and audience awareness.
Drawing inspiration from across the curriculum, the resulting performances showcased a wide range of perspectives. Students applied comedic interpretation to everything from academic disciplines to everyday school experiences. The result was a varied and engaging programme that balanced creativity with thoughtful observation.
On stage, students demonstrated not only strong comedic instincts but also confidence, clarity and control. Delivery, timing and collaboration all played a crucial role, with performers supporting one another to maintain pace and audience engagement throughout.
Beyond the laughter, Loose Canon highlights the role of oracy in shaping effective communicators. It provides a space for students to experiment, take creative risks and develop the ability to present ideas clearly and confidently in front of an audience.
