The Spring Term began with a musical flourish, as the Lower School resonated with the sounds of young musicians sharing their talents.
In February, over 200 girls performed solo pieces at their class concerts, from a beginner double bass player proudly demonstrating the names of the strings to an impressive Grade 5 flute performance of Vivace. This celebration of individual progress culminated in a special soloists’ concert, where the Year 6 girls showcased their musical talents on a range of instruments and in a variety of styles, from Mozart’s Fantaisie in D Minor on the piano to the joyful pop-rap sound of the World Book Day Song. During the same week, the NLCS Young Singers performed at the world’s largest children’s choir event, the Young Voices Concert at the O2 Arena. Accompanied by a live band, backing singers and an internationally acclaimed conductor, our students joined 8,000 children in a spine-tingling performance. It was a spectacular and unforgettable experience.
March brought further musical highlights. The Lower School Small Ensemble Concert offered a wonderful showcase of collaborative music-making, with over 80 girls performing in a variety of ensembles, from strings and recorders to guitar and wind groups. The term was further enriched by visits from two outstanding professional musicians. Year 6 took part in an inspiring composing workshop with Joanna Forbes L’Estrange as they prepared music for their upcoming production Tom’s Midnight Dreams. We were also delighted to welcome Dan Ludford-Thomas, Director of the National Children’s Choir of Great Britain, who led an energetic workshop for the Year 3 and 4 choir and an inspiring masterclass for the Canons Choir.
The highlight of the term was undoubtedly the GSA National Final Choir of the Year 2026, where the Canons Choir performed exceptionally and triumphed once again, proudly winning the national title for the third time.
