Junior Music Round up – Autumn Term

9 December 2024

Whole School

It has been a very busy and musical autumn term for the junior school. From First School Productions to the Lower School Winter Concert, all the Junior school girls have taken part in various exciting music activities.

The first school gave a showcase of the Harvest Festival Music assembly at the beginning of the term. Recently, from Reception to Y2, all the girls got involved with the First School Play. Their marvellous acting, singing, and dancing wowed the audience.

November was a special and busy month for Lower School girls. On the 14th, Year 6 went to their 1st year group music trip to watch ‘The Planet’ London Symphony Orchestra Concert at the Barbican. The girls heard the tunes they recognized from TV and film, played by the biggest orchestra that LSO has ever assembled for a school concert (over 100 players). They even had to extend the stage to fit! Alongside Holst’s music, the girls also sang a new song, ‘The Method,’ with other schools, accompanied by LSO.

On Monday, 25th November, as winners (for the second year in a row) of the Barnardo’s Junior Choir of the Year competition, Canons Choir had earned the honour of singing a solo piece at the Barnardo’s Young Supporters Concert at the Royal Alber Hall. Under the direction of music director Mrs. Cox, the girls captivated the audience with their beautiful harmonies and depth of emotion as the notes of Darius Lim’s enchanting Night of Rainbows filled the hall. This extraordinary musical experience will be a memory much treasured by all of those who took part.

Following on the same week, Our Story has been heard during the Lower School Winter Concert. The girls performed beautifully, their voices and instruments soaring through the PAC in the wide range of music. The entire PAC was silent when the Junior Orchestra opened the concert with the upbeat ‘We Go Together’ medley. The standard of performance was exceptionally high and professional. From Wind Group, ‘Walking in the Air’ from The Snowman to Percussion Ensemble Beatle’s ‘Come Together’ to a wonderful melodic song ‘A Peaceful World’ by the Y5&6 Choir. The humorous ‘Celebrate Life Today’ by Y3&4 Choir charmed and delighted their audience. The lyrical ‘Caledonia’ was a great success, and the Canons Choir performed with real precision and meaning. The fabulous finals were very well choreographed and harmonised. ‘Raise My Voice’ and ‘Our Story’ were nothing short of spectacular.

Reception is very much looking forward to their Nativity play at the end of the term. No doubt, it will bring everyone into the festive spirit.
