On Wednesday, May 15, we were delighted to welcome 2 speakers to NLCS to speak at our annual Italian symposium.

Dr. Lucia Rinaldi, from UCL, delivered a riveting presentation titled “Investigating Law, Order, and Organised Crime in Sciascia’s The Day of the Owl.” Dr. Rinaldi delved into the intricacies of this groundbreaking novel, hailed as the first to delve into the shadowy world of mafia culture. Attendees were treated to a deep analysis of the novel’s exploration of law enforcement, order, and the complex dynamics of organised crime.

Following Dr Rinaldi, Ms. Ava Siena Cohen, an ONL and PhD candidate at Durham University, presented a paper on the celebrated baroque female artist Artemisia Gentileschi. In her talk, titled “The Feminist in the Frame: How Artemisia Gentileschi Foregrounds the Female Figure as a Subject,” Cohen explored the empowering portrayal of women in Gentileschi’s art.

The symposium provided a vibrant platform for scholarly exchange, celebrating the richness of Italian literature and art. Huge thanks to our speakers and to the MFL Department for organising such a wonderful event.
