STEM trip – ST26 7

36 NLCS students enjoyed an unforgettable week in Tokyo, and they’re still buzzing about robots, ramen, and real-world Computer Science.

From robots and ramen to magnetic trains and Mount Fuji, the February STEM trip brought Computer Science to life in ways no classroom ever could.

At Kawasaki Robostage, students came face-to-face with Japan’s advanced humanoid robots. At the DAWN Avatar Robot Café, they saw technology used in a powerful way ,robots serving drinks, remotely operated by people with disabilities. A real reminder that innovation isn’t just impressive, it can be life-changing.

The Maglev Exhibition Centre revealed the future of transport. Trains travelling at 500km/h using magnetic levitation suddenly made physics feel very real. Watching a live demonstration of magnets in action was a highlight for many.

TeamLab Planets was a standout moment. Students stepped barefoot into immersive digital art that responded to their movement. Light, sensors, projection and code combined to create something extraordinary — technology transformed into experience.

Food was an adventure in itself. Students grilled Japanese BBQ at their tables, cooked shabu-shabu hot pot, sampled authentic sushi and navigated Tokyo’s famous convenience stores with growing confidence.

Beyond the technology, they explored ancient Sensoji Temple, crossed the world-famous Shibuya Crossing, experienced a magnitude 7 earthquake simulation, and hoped for a clear view of Mount Fuji.
