The Junior School made a powerful impact with a remarkable event on Thursday 13 March, dedicated to raising funds for ‘icandance,’ a charity that offers dance classes and performance opportunities to children and young people with disabilities and differences.

Following Mrs. Rushbrook’s heartfelt assembly last term, where she shared the story of her niece—who has Down Syndrome and adores her dance classes—all Lower School girls were invited to channel their creativity into crafting a dance piece themed ‘Stronger Together.’ This theme beautifully captures our belief that society flourishes when we embrace and celebrate each other’s unique differences.

Juliet, the founder of ‘icandance,’ along with two young ambassadors from the charity, spoke to the students and showcased a filmed performance by ‘icandance’ participants. Selected NLCS girls then performed their pieces before a panel of judges, which included the ‘icandance’ ambassadors, the founder, four Year 6 representatives, and one of our Sixth Form students who is both a dancer and a dedicated volunteer with the charity. After reviewing the performances, this panel selected the winners.

Congratulations to all the dancers for delivering an afternoon filled with joy and expressive performances across various styles! Special recognition goes to the winners in each category:

A big well done to Hazel in Year 4, the winner of the solo category, for her stunning kathak performance to an Indian rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.” The judges were particularly impressed with how she blended different styles and cultures, beautifully capturing the theme that collaboration makes us stronger together.

Well done to Aayra and Aurora in Year 3, who took the top spot in the duo category with their energetic performance of Beyoncé’s “Run the World.” Their infectious joy and impeccable synchronisation left a lasting impression on the judges.

Congratulations to Amber, Isla, and Shreya in Year 5, the winners of the group performance category. Their use of space and the powerful narrative they created while dancing to Rachel Patten’s “Stand by You” was especially appreciated by the judges.

Lastly, congratulations to Ishiraa and Gia in Year 4, who won the award for best reflecting the theme “Stronger Together.” Their dance beautifully showcased the story of friends supporting one another, with intricate choreography, stage presence, and an impressive ability to work seamlessly together.

The event culminated in an uplifting celebration of dance, reminding us all that movement should be accessible to everyone. The girls contributed by paying an entry fee to participate, and additional funds were raised through donations for the opportunity to wear their own clothes and receive a treat bag.
