There was energy, confidence and no shortage of mischief as Year 7 and 8 students took to the stage for a spirited production of Matilda Jr., delivering a performance packed with humour, pace and plenty of audience appeal.

From the opening moments, the cast established a lively rhythm that never let up. Scenes moved briskly, musical numbers were delivered with real conviction, and the production captured the playful irreverence that makes Matilda such an enduring favourite. Just as importantly, the performers looked as though they were enjoying every second of it and that enthusiasm quickly spread through the audience.

The strength of the show lay in its ensemble work. Rather than relying on a handful of standout moments, the production succeeded because of the collective commitment on stage. Chorus numbers were vibrant and sharply executed, with strong vocals and clear storytelling throughout.

Among the evening’s biggest successes were some of the show’s most iconic comic set pieces. Bruce Bogtrotter’s infamous cake eating challenge was handled with excellent comic timing, while the newt in the water scene landed perfectly, balancing chaos and humour without ever feeling overplayed. Both moments demonstrated the cast’s confidence and the production’s careful sense of pacing.

Visually, the show was equally effective. The set created a vivid sense of place and gave the production a distinctive character of its own. Combined with energetic staging and slick scene transitions, it ensured the momentum never dipped and helped maintain the show’s upbeat atmosphere from start to finish.

What emerged overall was a production full of warmth, personality and youthful confidence. Matilda Jr. is a show that depends on energy and imagination, and this cast delivered both in abundance, keeping the audience thoroughly entertained throughout.
