The Perse is a national Python code programming competition open to all Year 7 – 11 students. The students compete to have their names inscribed on the Braben Cup and win a cash prize.
NLCS students were introduced to the competition and given the chance to participate during the Computer Science Department’s lunchtime Code Club. During Round 1, the students paired up or participated on their own to complete 10 questions of varying difficulty in 40 min. As a result, 17 of our students were invited to participate in Round 2. In this round, the students worked in trios or pairs if they preferred. They had to complete problems which were considerably harder than those in Round 1. They had to complete as many as they could in 1 hour using technical and team work skills. Our NLCS teams did really well, with four teams achieving Higher Participation and one team, made up of Sarah (Year 8), Anika (Year 7) and Deevi K (Year 7), achieving a Merit and a special competition certificate.
Congratulations to all students taking part and embracing new challenges so confidently.
During the Easter Holidays, Year 10 Student Ahana was invited by University College London to speak on a panel about the challenges women face when they want to enter tech careers.
Ahana joined 2 other students both studying Computer Science at university to discuss this important topic. During the panel, Ahana spoke about the importance of studying Computer Science in secondary school and how it helps to find future tech careers.
The conclusion reached by the panel was that more girls should be exposed to programming and robotics in secondary school to ensure a more diverse environment in the tech world.
The panel was used by UCL to improve their Computer Science outreach program and we send huge congratulations to Ahana for being invited as a panellist.
