Four modules are studied and examined, two at AS and two at A2. Fieldwork and research skills are a key part of both the AS and A2 courses. The specification addresses many of the key issues and debates in today’s world
eg. Unit 1: World at Risk looks at the impacts of Climate Change on two very vulnerable regions, Africa and the Arctic and evaluates a range of strategies to cope with Climate Change
eg. Unit 4: The Technology Fix looks at the increasing reliance on technology and how this relates to global development. .
AS (Year 12)
Unit 1 (6GEO1): Global Challenges (60%)
Topic 1: World at Risk:
· the ‘Top 6’ global natural hazards (volcanoes, earthquakes, flooding, drought, hurricanes and other storm events and mass movement), their distribution and impact
· why these hazards threaten some parts of the world more than others – issues of risk and vulnerability
· climate change and global warming, seen by many as our greatest environmental challenge
Topic 2: Going Global:
· the causes and effects of globalisation
· global groupings
· how globalisation impacts of different countries and societies in different ways
· population change and migration
· world cities
Unit 2 (6GE02): Geographical Investigations (40%)
Topic 1: Crowded Coasts
· the pressures caused by development in the coastal zone eg. habitat destruction, pollution, conflicts in use of the coastal zone
· coastal erosion and flooding
· management strategies to protect the coastal zone
Topic 2: Rebranding Places
· why do places need rebranding?
· What strategies can be used to rebrand, urban area, rural areas and seaside resorts?
· How successful is rebranding?
Fieldwork:
There is a four day fieldcourse to Somerset during the Spring Term as part of the Geographical Investigations course.
Assessment:
Unit 1:1 hour 30 minute examination
Unit 2:1 hour examination paper
