Iceland Trip August 2009

Following the success of the 2007 trip to Iceland, the geography department are taking 18 students from years 10 and 11 to Iceland in August 2009.

The trip includes;

Day 1: Monday 24th August

  • Flight: UK-Iceland (Heathrow - Keflavik) with Icelandair
  • Meet our guide and travel to the Blue Lagoon to relax and enjoy the geothermal waters.
  • Transfer to the 4* Hotel Selfoss (Keflavik) for check in and evening meal

Day 2: Tuesday 25th August

Visits to…

  • Skogafoss waterfall, more than 200feet high.
  • A short visit to Skogar the home of Iceland’s best known folk museum en route to the cliffs at Reynishverfi and Dyrolaey.
  • A chance to walk on the Solheimajokull glacier.
  • Overnight at Hotel Selfoss

Pingvellir National Park; site of the World's first parliament.

Day 3: Wednesday 26th August

Visits to…

  • A full day tour to Porsmork, 150km east of Reykjavik and one of Iceland’s top natural reserves; known as Thor’s landscape of rocks, glaciers, wild wood and rivers.
  • Travel on a ‘superbus’ and explore Gigujokull where a glacier calves into a pro-glacial lake.
  • See Seljalandsfoss waterfall and the rift canyon at Stakkholtsgja
  • Evening entertainment of Ice-skating at the local indoor ice rink
  • Overnight at Hotel Selfoss

Day 4: Thursday 27th August

The Golden Circle

  • Full day excursion to visit Hveragerdi to observe geothermal energy use in huge greenhouses used to grow plants, vegetables and flowers.
  • Travel to Kerio, a lake filled volcanic crater to look at volcanic landforms.
  • Stop at Gullfoss waterfall, one of the most impressive in Europe.
  • Followed by the great geyser Strokkur, spouting 10-20m every ten minutes.
  • Finally travel through Pingvellir National Park; a beautiful canyon where two tectonic plates meet at the mid Atlantic Ridge and the site of Iceland’s first Parliament.
  • Overnight at the 3* Fosshotel Baron in Rejkjavik

Day 5: Friday 28th August

  • Breakfast at the hotel and explore the city for site seeing
  • Transfer to Keflavik airport;

Return flight Keflavik-Heathrow with Icelandair.
