This November year 9 spent a full day of timetable exploring the issue of free trade and Fair Trade.
In the morning Mr Brewer from the economic department proposed the benefits of free trade, before students took part in the trade game in a bid to highlight the inherent injustices of world trade. Later on in the day we were joined by David and Ronwyn Millne, who are volunteer speakers working with Traidcraft. The couple talked about their fascinating experiences of visiting fair trade projects in India and Kenya. Finally James Mackay who runs a small Peruvian based firm selling ethically produced clothing talked to the students about how his company help to protect the interests of Quechan manufacturers in the Andes mountains.
The students have now launched a campaign to promote Fair Trade products in our local Stanmore Sainsbury's Supermarket and series of 6 posters are now on display in the supermarket with the aim of increasing awareness at a local level in order to affect a global change!
