Brazil Day 2009

Article: Alex Wingrove (Yr 8)

On Friday May 1st 2009, Yr 8 students celebrated Brazil Day.

Having previously studied Brazil in Geography lessons we had an understanding of the country, its culture and traditions, but we expected that the purpose of the day was to expose us to the fresh culture of Brazil and teach us valuable lessons that we would not have covered in the classroom.

Throughout the day, we attended four sessions including, the native dance of capoiera, carnival drumming, drama and samba class. It was an action packed schedule that was sure to push us out of our comfort zones.

As well as having heaps of fun we managed to gain real skills from the sessions and learn more about the unique culture of Brazil.

I found myself captivated by the emotions that one dance can convey and I was eager to learn the steps. The complex dance moves of the samba were difficult to pick up but the atmosphere was so great; a real mixture of excitement and determination.

Combined with a specially themed lunch and mufti the whole day proved to be a success.

Jemma Paek in 8C said, ‘Brazil day was so exhilarating: we all learnt so much within the 6 hours at school. All of us enjoyed it and the different workshops were so interesting. At the end of the day, everyone was exhausted - but it was definitely worth it.’

On behalf on everyone in Year 8, I would like to thank the Geography department (Mr Waterson in particular) for organising the day and the carnival and Brazilian groups that came in to share their wonderful skills with us and help us to celebrate and appreciate Brazil.
