Matisse Exhibition Private View

The Friends of NLCS were treated to a Private View of the Matisse exhibition on the 9th November 2011, led by Mr Tom Hardy, Head of Art. Guests enjoyed returning to the school and catching up with old friends over drinks and canapés in the Athenian Cafe of the Performing Arts Centre.

Mr Hardy gave an interesting introduction to the exhibition, Matisse Drawing with Scissors: Late Works 1950-1954. The lithographic reproductions in this exhibition are taken from a special double issue of Verve, a review of art and literature published in 1958 by Teriade, a major publisher of livres d'artiste, fine books illustrated by the original graphic work of contemporary artists. The cover is from a collage especially cut by Matisse and the first lithographic plates were prepared under his direction in 1954, a few days before his death.
