Yr 10 Greek Visit to British Museum and National Gallery
On Wednesday 10th February, the 15 Yr 10 Greek students, accompanied by Mrs O'Sullivan and Mr Hitchcock, headed to central London to explore the British Museum and National Gallery. In the morning session, girls explored Greek art from early Cycladic figures, black and red figure vases, through to the impressive Parthenon Galleries. They were pleased to be able to put their hard work on Greek language into good use by identifying and translating inscriptions on vases. After exploring the Parthenon Galleries and researching the Elgin Marbles debate, the group moved on to the National Gallery for the afternoon session.
Here they were treated to a view of and talk about four works of art connected by the theme of Greek mythology, including Claude's ‘Landscape with Narcissus and Echo' and a pair of Titian paintings on the story of Actaeon and Diana. Girls were able to move from the newly-acquired ‘Diana and Actaeon' to the consequent ‘Death of Actaeon' and were quick to spot hints as to the final outcome of the story in the former painting. A great day was had by all and the students broadened considerably their knowledge and understanding of Greek art and its influence.
