On Tuesday 2nd March, the whole of Yr 9 travelled into London to visit the British Museum. They have studied Pompeii, Alexandria and Roman Britain in their Latin lessons and this trip gave them the opportunity to explore daily life in the ancient world. They undertook a variety of tasks that included filming a video-advertisment to ‘sell' an artefact of their choice. The artefacts chosen ranged from a set of crocodile-skin armour to a metal rat playing a trumpet! The teachers were impressed by the creativity and presentation skills shown by the students and enjoyed watching the videos shown later in lessons.
Some Yr 9 students gave their opinions of the day:
Isabella Tarizzo: ‘It was great to see all the artefacts up close rather than in a textbook. It made Roman Britain easier to imagine.'
Sophia Ward: ‘I really liked the way the question sheets were constructed as I do not often look at objects in museums in much detail, but the questions helped you to find the smaller details that you may not have noticed previously.
Cassandra Villeneuve: ‘We found many interesting kitchen utensils and discovered that no one used forks. We also found glass jars and learnt that specific colours of glass were more precious than others'.
Alex Wingrove: ‘Overall the day was thoroughly enjoyed and well-organised. Many thanks to all who took part in the organisation of it.'
