Classics trip to Italy 2010

Article: Mrs O'Sullivan (Head of Classics)

Forty students of Latin, Greek and/or Classical Civilisation from Years 11 and 12 spent a week in Italy during October half-term 2010 exploring the ancient world. The first two days were spent in Rome, visiting key sites such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Pantheon and the marvellous Capitoline Museum. The opportunity to take in Piazza Navona (and its surrounding shopping streets), as well as the Trevi Fountain, proved popular, as did the plentiful ice-cream devoured by the girls. After transferring to Sorrento, via a morning stop to explore the ancient Roman port of Ostia, the remaining days were spent in excursions to the sites in the surrounding area.

A full-day visit to Pompeii and an afternoon in Herculaneum allowed students to explore these extensive ruins in full. Other visits included the Greek temples at Paestum, the amphitheatre at Puzzuoli and the Sibyl's cave at Cumae. A drive down the beautiful Amalfi coast afforded some breath-taking views. A fantastic time was had by all and the girls made the most of the opportunity to explore some of the most exciting remains from the ancient world, as well, of course, as the Italian cuisine.
