Classics Symposium 2010

The annual Classics Symposium took place on 30th November.  This year's event featured two highly enjoyable talks: first, ‘How we got out Classical texts' presented by Dr Gail Trimble, a fellow in Classics at Trinity College, Cambridge. Dr Trimble has also recently made the news headlines after she was hailed as the brainiest woman on British television after steering her team to victory in the 2009 University Challenge.  It was an academically stimulating presentation and provided the girls with an insight into the alterations, both literal and physical, of classical texts through time.

The second, ‘Viewing the Modern World through the eyes of the Ancient,' was presented by Natalie Haynes, a British comedian who studied Classics at Christ's College, Cambridge. The talk explored the influences of the Ancient World on today's modern society and was extremely entertaining.

These were followed by a three course dinner served in the dining hall. Girls enjoyed a feast of food on a Roman and Greek theme including pitta bread and hummus, moussaka and greek yogurt with honey. Another highlight of the evening was the challenging classics quiz, devised by the Classics Department.

Many thanks go to Mrs O'Sullivan who organised the symposium and Mrs Turner, the head of catering for preparing an excellent meal.
