Music Department

The Music Department aims to provide an opportunity for all girls to experience quality music, and to provide as many opportunities as possible for performance. The Department has 3 full-time members of staff in the Senior School and 2 part-time members of staff in the First and Junior School.

There are 27 instrumental staff who teach all the standard instruments. Over 500 pupils receive weekly instrumental tuition, and many teachers hold regular, informal concerts given by their pupils.

Music is taught to all girls, as part of the core curriculum, in Years 7, 8 and 9, when the pupils are introduced to a wide range of music through the processes of Listening, Performing and Composing. In Year 10 Music can be chosen as a IGCSE subject.

The new syllabus, introduced in September 2006, provides a broad, basic structure whilst allowing pupils to follow their own strengths and interests. In Year 12 pupils may study Music at AS, A2 and IB Levels. Again the choice of courses facilitates many different interests through an imaginative choice of options.

A large number of concerts are given throughout the year, and venues have included the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. John's, Smith Square, The House of Lords, The Marriot Hotel Grovesnor Square, Bray Parish Church etc. In addition, in 2003, 50 girls toured Philadelphia and New York giving concerts at various venues.

Recent performances at Senior Concerts have included Handel’s Messiah and Kodaly’s Missa Brevis sung by the Senior Choir and Mars and Jupiter from Holst’s Planets Suite played by the Orchestra.

Chamber music is a particular strength at North London Collegiate School and over 30 ensembles rehearse regularly each week. These activities are greatly valued by the many advanced musicians in the school, who are able to study a broad repertoire of pieces over their years in the Senior School. In the National Chamber Music Competition, North London Collegiate has been the most successful competing school.
