The play is adapted from a novel of the same name by Catherine Storr, which was published in 1958 and soon became a children’s classic. It tells the story of Marianne, who falls ill on her tenth birthday and is confined to her bed for six weeks. After finding a pencil in her great-grandmother’s workbox she begins to dream about the places she has drawn, and soon discovers her pencil and her drawings hold great power.
This is the first end of year production for Yr 6 and the girls have been working as an ensemble to present this piece. All the girls are involved in acting, movement sequences and playing music. In order to represent the different sides of Marianne that become free in her dreams, eight girls are playing versions of Marianne in her dreams. Marianne’s inner self is also represented by the girls in the ensemble who act both as a bridge between the audience and Marianne and as spirits pulling Marianne into her dream world.
Well done to all the girls!
