School tortoise rediscovered

Story: Riana Thakrar (Yr 8)

For many years the Junior School has been in proud possession of two Mediterranean tortoises – more commonly known as Frances and Mary. Having once belonged to Mrs Dee Francken’s husband in the 1950s, they are now over 60 years of age!

The story goes that on the 9th April 2008, Frances was found giving birth to 3 eggs! As far as we know, this is the first time that she has laid eggs. It is unsure whether or not they are healthy but after speaking to a vet it was decided that it would be best if they were kept in an incubator in the Senior School. We wait patiently for further developments...

Last September, when the tortoises were about to put into hibernation, Mary went missing. After a long winter of searching there was no sign of her and the Junior School thought that she was lost for good. It was feared that she had been stolen during the open day weekend or even escaped! However, at the beginning of the term, a gardener spotted Mary wondering about happily in the spring sunshine. She had evidently dug her own hole in the earth and had been hibernating there all winter.
