About the Headmistress
Bernice McCabe has been Headmistress of North London Collegiate School since 1997.
Educated at Clifton High School and Bristol University, she began her career in mixed comprehensive schools. From 1990-1997 she was Headmistress of Chelmsford County High School, a maintained girls' grammar school during which time she studied for her MBA.
Since 2002 Mrs McCabe has directed the Prince of Wales Education Summer Schools for teachers of English and History and is also now Co-Director of The Prince's Teaching Institute. Through the Prince's Teaching Institute, she and her NLCS teaching staff have shared a commitment to subject-based learning with over 1000 maintained schools and 3300 teachers. These partnerships and mentoring opportunities have been of great benefit to the professional development of the NLCS teaching staff.
She has served on a number of governing bodies and national education committees in the maintained and independent sectors, including the National Grammar Schools Association and the GSA/HMC Universities Committee. Since 2010 she has been a member of the Government's National Curriculum Review Advisory Committee. The Headmistress has been named in the Evening Standard's Top 1000 Most Influential People in London for the last few years.
Mrs McCabe's belief is that subject rigour, depth of subject knowledge and the ability to communicate a love of subject to students are the fundamental requirements for effective teaching.
In a recent interview she said:
While a good teacher needs to be a good communicator and lessons have to be well structured, at NLCS we focus less on classroom methodology than on developing teachers who can communicate the essence of a subject. My interest when I appoint teachers is in someone who can inspire the children they are in front of. I expect inspirational lessons in all subjects - excitement about learning has to be there throughout the school. Children here are passionate about subjects because teachers are also passionate.
Bernice McCabe has been appointed an Expert Advisor for the London Schools Excellence Fund.
