Biology

What we do...

Our Yr 12 girls run a Science Club for years 7 and 8, where exciting experiments are carried out.  In the summer term this can extend into the school grounds, which has a variety of habitats, including a summer flower meadow, woodland and a large pond.

We have had several Biological talks in Science Society, including a recent visit from Steve Jones, talking about our evolutionary links with other primates and the evolution of H.I.V.  We also have several exciting talks in Biology in Science Week.

Thirty Yr 12 girls go to Dale Fort, Pembrokeshire for an enjoyable and intensive Marine Ecology field trip. Here they learn about the ecology of the inter-tidal shore and carry out an individual investigation of their own choice.  The highlight of the trip is a visit to Skomer Island to learn about conservation and to see the puffins at close range!

Most years some of our Yr 12 Biologists successfully applied for and gained a Nuffield Bursary award. They spend four weeks of their summer holidays carrying out research in a science laboratory using up-to-date apparatus.  They present their findings at Imperial College, London.

In March, several Yr 12 Biologists visit the National Institute of Medical Research to attend a series of lectures and practical demonstrations.

We enter a team of six Yr 13 students for the Biology Olympiad competition.
