November 2009

Yr 12 AS Politics students spent a fascinating afternoon at the House of Lords, learning about the work of Parliament and discussing constitutional issues.

The afternoon began with a surprise glimpse of David Cameron, hastily exiting from Westminster Hall following Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons. We then began the day in earnest, meeting with Baroness Northover and Lord Dholakia to discuss the work of the Lords and the constitutional interaction between Parliament and government.

The students then had the chance to question Liberal Democrat MP Lynne Featherstone, focusing particularly on issues of equal representation in the Commons. The afternoon was rounded off with a fascinating discussion with Baroness Shirley Williams, who gave us a remarkable insight into her forty year career in Parliament.

Finally, and unexpectedly, the girls were treated to a debate in the chamber of the Lords that featured the maiden speech of the newly created Lord Alan Sugar, the self-described ‘apprentice’ to the House of Peers!

All in all, it was a highly engaging, entertaining and informative visit. Particular thanks go to Baroness Northover for all her help in arranging the day.
