The Performing Arts Centre came alive last night in an evening dedicated to celebrating the performing and visual arts. The sparkling display of multiple art forms on the theme of Shakespeare fused together to create a magical production.

The event began with a private viewing of art-work inspired by Shakespeare and his work by girls throughout the school. Then, the school's Senior Orchestra opened the show with their performance of Prokofiev's Montagues and Capulets, demonstrating the musical talent within the school. Following on, separate ensembles played pieces from Bernstein, Cole Porter and Walton. The Soul Band brought the first half of the evening to a dramatic close with their rendition of Statton's Young Hearts Run Free and Des'ree's Kissing You. This music ties in with underlying theme of the night as they feature in the 1996 film production of Romeo and Juliet.

The second half was a mixture of musical theatre with performances of songs from West Side Story broken up by extracts from a variety of Shakespearian plays by Drama students. These heartfelt scenes demonstrated the deep understanding and interpretation of these plays by the girls involved. West Side Story, based upon the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, encapsulated the emotions of the story as well as providing great entertainment. I feel pretty, America and Somewhere included spectacular solos performances as well as marvellous dancing and the wonderful accompaniment of the orchestra.

This performance has been made possible through the generous support of the Doris Gregory Trust and due to his longstanding work with the Trust, the evening was dedicated to the memory of Mr Don Lundie.
