Rhiya Pau, Yr 11, has been duly elected for the National Youth Parliament and will be representing the Borough of Harrow for this year with her winning slogan Voice for Choice!’.

After the election earlier this month, Rhiya attended a number of events including the previous year’s National Youth Parliament concluding event focussing on tackling terrorism and promoting unity. Rhiya also attended the Borough of Harrow’s Council Budget Meeting.

Rhiya and the other representatives from Harrow in the National Youth Parliament, hope to hold a forum this year on tackling gang culture. They aim for this to be co-funded by the police. This was decided when the representatives asked young people what they considered to be the most pressing issue concerning them, and a significant proportion felt it was violence.

They also believe that young people have a lack of positive recognition. Another goal for the year involves the recognition of young people’s talents and reducing negative press centred around young people. They consider that the press portray negativity amongst young people and they therefore do not feel the need to reach beyond expectations.

Now that she has been elected, Rhiya has many other goals she hopes to achieve. She will support free public transport for under eighteens and student ID enabling under eighteens discounts at most entertainment complexes. Providing grants for young people to run their own youth clubs is also one of her priorities.

Rhiya believes that her policies are 'what young people want’.

Rhiya also commented that she has 'really high aspirations about what young people can achieve’.
