October began with a bang for girls in Yr 4 who visited The Royal Institution of Great Britain to hear a science lecture entitled ‘Sound – Music to our ears’.

They learned about vibrations and sound waves, as well as pitch and volume. They enjoyed seeing a 'slinky' being used to demonstrate sound waves and saw how it was possible to make materials ‘sing’ by setting up resonance within them - a glass of water made a high pitched noise when rubbed with a wet finger around the rim, and the girls gasped when they heard a metal tube emit a note once it had been heated up with a blow torch! Everyone enjoyed learning about hearing and sound in a very interesting trip.
