On Tuesday 15th March, during National Science and Engineering Week, NLCS was invited by St Albans' Engineering and Technology Society to attend a lecture at the school. A group of Yr 11 girls accompanied by Miss Zugg, Head of Mathematics travelled to St Albans Boys School to listen to Professor Shahin Rahimifard, University of Loughborough present a talk entitled, ‘Envisaging the future: Engineering, but not as we know it.'
Professor Rahimifard commenced the talk by outlining the major global problems of the future including climate change, water depletion and resource depletion. The wider ramifications of these problems were explored in relation to the rapid global population growth presenting us with the question, ‘How are we going to design and manufacture our future products when it is predicted that world energy demands will be 45% higher within the next twenty years?'
The talk introduced the growing field of sustainable engineering as the solution to these problems. As a relatively new and lesser known field of engineering it was fascinating to hear about the developing opportunities available within this area. The lecture was both entertaining and informative, leaving the students with the inspirational quote, ‘One person can make a difference, and everyone should try,' John F. Kennedy.
