Professor Steve Jones visits NLCS

On Thursday 2nd February, as part of Maths and Science Week, NLCS was privileged to welcome distinguished scientist and broadcaster, Professor Steve Jones, to give a talk entitled "Nature, Nurture...or Neither?"

Having written a number of popular books on genetics and evolution, including The Language of the Genes, and Darwin's Island,  Professor Jones has won the BP Natural World Book Prize in 1999, the Institute of Biology Charter Medal and the Royal Society Faraday Medal for public understanding of science.

From the genetics of the royal family, to Siamese cats and Shakespeare, Professor Jones' engaging talk explored the extent to which our genes determine our characteristics. Covering issues such as obesity and criminality, the talk concluded that, although a genetic component plays a vital role, it is only through fusion with environmental factors, that such genes can express themselves.

As an award-winning scientist, and leading figure in genetics, Professor Jones' work has greatly contributed to an increased public understanding of human evolution, and his talk was a fantastic opportunity for staff and students alike to engage in science outside of the school curriculum.
