Year 11 IGCSE Music students were treated to a fascinating introduction to Japanese music today by Dr David Hughes (SOAS). Dr Hughes is a leading expert on traditional Japanese music, particularly folk music, and has published widely in addition to performing and giving pre-concert talks. He brought a selection of instruments - all of which he demonstrated to the class - and illustrated his talk with a wealth of recordings and performances. He has researched folk music for over thirty years and gave the girls not only an engaging insight into the music but additionally a colourful introduction to the culture. Japanese music is currently the set topic for the IGCSE syllabus.
