On Thursday 5th May, NLCS welcomed the Executive Director of the Environmental Investigation Agency, Mary Rice, and a member of her team, Alasdair. Girls from all years had the opportunity to listen to a fascinating talk, entitled ‘Environmental Crime: Our Planet, Our Problem' in both the senior societies and lunch slots.
We heard about different types of environmental crime, from the ivory trade to ‘logging' (trading wood from illegally deforested areas) and how EIA members discover, track and find evidence for such illegal activity, often putting themselves in danger for the sake of the cause. Our visitors even showed us some of their specialist undercover-camera equipment, used by investigators to record conversations with the criminals (including cameras hidden in handbags and polo shirts!).
The EIA is the Year 8 Charity Committee's chosen charity for this academic year. The committee will be continuing to support this worthwhile cause through events in the summer term. Money raised will go towards saving the lives of millions of rare and endangered animals and putting a stop to the devastating effects of environmental criminals. But it's not all about money- raising awareness is JUST as important! If you'd like to support the charity in other ways, take a look at their website: http://www.eia-international.org/index.shtml.
