Modern Languages Department

Modern Languages at North London Collegiate seeks not just to provide girls with linguistic expertise but also an understanding of the target culture through exposure to literature, current affairs and media. Creativity and imagination are emphasised, in addition to debating and presentation skills.
Girls will have the opportunity to learn French, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian and Mandarin Chinese. We teach the five European languages to A2 and IB level; Mandarin is available as an Asset Languages qualification and an IB ab initio course in the Sixth Form.  Many girls go on to study languages at the top universities in the U.K. and abroad.

The target language is used in the classroom.  Lessons are fast-paced, interactive and multi-skilled, using a variety of state-of-the-art resources.  There are 6 foreign language assistants who provide conversation sessions. Girls have the chance to visit a wide range of destinations, including Buenos Aires, Berlin, St Petersburg, Seville, Venice and Paris, as well as London-based cultural excursions to museums, theatres and cinemas. A trip to Beijing is planned for the near future.

We also have a very active Polyglot Society run by Sixth formers to promote Modern Languages throughout the school. As well as the annual celebration of the European Day of Languages in September, the Polyglot Society also runs a foreign languages symposium each year, foreign language book and film clubs, a mentor system to help younger girls who are learning languages, and invites guest speakers to the school.
