On Wednesday 4th May NLCS entered The Times National Spelling Bee for the first time to return from local heats triumphant. The four strong team was selected last term in a year-wide competition to identify the top Year 7 spellers and they certainly acquitted themselves well, beating seven other schools in the North London area to secure a place in the semi-final!
Led by team captain, Cynthia Fernando (7S), team members Eve Mason (7S), and Felicity Saunders (7L), kept their cool through the nerve-racking Spelling Challenge (with any mistake leading to immediate elimination!) to top the leader board at the end of the first round. Later in the competition Emily Godwin (7N), stepped up and proved calm under pressure during the Quick - Fire round which consisted of two minutes to spell as many words as possible! The team racked up an impressive overall score of 54 to place first and be crowned local champions; an exceptional performance that can only be taken as a statement of intent for the rest of the competition.
