Relay for Life

Story by Serena Patel (Yr 9)

Website Editors: Miriam Fine and Leah Schabas (Yr 12)

This event took place on the 8th and 9th September at Bannister Sports Centre. Relay For Life is an inspirational community event designed to celebrate the lives of people touched by cancer and raise money for the vital work of Cancer Research UK.

The event starts with a lap of honour by survivors of cancer. Each team had members who took turns walking or running around the track. We had a gazebo in which we had a chocolate fountain and sold Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Throughout the event there is live music, games, dancing and quizzes. There were also health talks. The Mayor of Harrow, and local MP, Tony McNulty also attended.

This event lasted 21 hours! In the evening there is the Candle of Hope ceremony which is foreveryone to remember those who have been lost to cancer and to celebrate the lives of those who have survived the disease. Our team, One Wish, raised almost £4,000.

This was the second year I took part as a team captain. I was inspired to take part as my aunt and grandmother both lost their battles against cancer.
